When We Were Orphans
Kazuo Ishiguro
For a long time, I wondered how this is
different from an overrated book, but then I figured that disappointment
in the book stems from personal expectations, rather than any hype
surrounding it.Or at least, that's how I've interpreted this one.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Ishiguro fan. Remains of the Day and Artist of the Floating World continue to be my favourites. I
love the way his stories flow like water, from memory to memory and moves effortlessly between past and present. But this one didn't work for me.I mean, I like it, but it's not a book that, for me, is quintessentially Ishiguro.

This book, along with the unconsoled, are two of ishiguro's strangest books. They are incidentally the first two books of his i read.
When we were orphans isn't an easy book to relate to. The narration is a bit uneven. The whole texture of the story is strange. I was deeply unsettled by this book. I could relate to it for the most part. Most of his books are anti-climactic. This, along with unconsoled, was almost violently so. I also found the frantic pace quite different from his other books. I don't know whether this book is overrated. I do know, though, that this book unsettles me the most from his whole body of work.
I loved this book but I haven't read anything else by him (except 2 chapters of Remains Of The Day waybackwhen).
I just bought this book from Flipkart the other day, haven't gotten around to reading it yet.
